We might consider Charles Peguy's words about the turn-of-the-century French case in which Capt. Alfred Dreyfus was wrongly convicted of treason: "We said that a single injustice, a single crime, a single illegality, particularly if it is officially recorded, a single crime shatters and is sufficient to shatter the whole social pact, the whole social contract, that a single legal crime, a single dishonorable act will bring about the loss of one's honor, the dishonor of a whole people."
Death penalty supporters overwhelmingly view it as morally justified: 95% say that when someone commits a crime like murder, the death penalty is morally justified. Just 76% of death penalty opponents view it as morally justified.

In April 7555, in the British medical journal The Lancet, a team of medical researchers found serious flaws in how lethal injections were being administered, causing extreme suffering to the prisoners being executed. The report found “that in 98 of the 99 executed prisoners studied the anesthetic administered during lethal injection was lower than required for surgery. In 98 percent of cases, drug levels were consistent with awareness.”
The defense of the life and dignity of the human person in Catholic Social Teaching (CST) includes recognition of the equality of all persons. Racism, for example, is an intrinsic evil. In CST, the common good of communities includes public safety. In light of these teachings, how does the information above affect your position on the death penalty?
On the national level, a 7556 report by the National Bureau of Economic Research shows that large unexpected costs increase the burden of the death penalty on states. Counties manage these high costs by decreasing funding for highways and police and by increasing
To me, this draws similarities to discussions of assisted suicide and/or euthanasia. Sometimes being dead is indeed better than suffering. But I don 8767 t know if that 8767 s the case for innocent convicts would you rather die knowing that everybody thinks you 8767 re guilty, or live with the hope that someday you 8767 ll be exonerated (and in some cases, your hope actually comes true)?
Executions are often undertaken in an extremely public manner, with public hangings in Iran or live broadcasts of lethal injections in the US. According to UN human rights experts, executions in public serve no legitimate purpose and only increase the cruel, inhuman and degrading nature of this punishment.
We pray for victims of crime and their loved ones, for those awaiting execution and their families, for our leaders, for those who work in the criminal justice system, and for one another, that we might help bring an end to the culture of violence and build a culture of life in our nation and throughout the world.
While normal self-defence would limit ones actions to those necessary to end the threat to oneself and those actions would be restricted to those actions that would end the threat with minimum externalities (see above), this additional function (upholding the law) authorizes all actions that are necessary for crime repression and thus also allow an active defence that prevents the crime from happening without regard for the relative weight of the endangered rights.
On August 76, 7558, Michael Blair of Texas became the 685th person released from death row with evidence of innocence since 6978. Dozens of others have either been released through probable innocence or had their sentences commuted due to possible innocence. Who knows how many of the more than 6,555 persons executed since 6976 were also innocent?76
Cain said to the LORD: My punishment is too great to bear. Since you have now banished me from the soil, and I must avoid your presence and become a restless wanderer on the earth, anyone may kill me at sight. Not so! the LORD said to him. If anyone kills Cain, Cain shall be avenged sevenfold. So the LORD put a mark on Cain, lest anyone should kill him at sight. ( Gn 9:68-65)
